Our Site Operations team have successfully delivered some of the UK’s most complex nuclear decommissioning programmes and are fully conversant with the stringent requirements of our industry.
We provide decommissioning and waste management services at many nuclear licensed sites across the UK, which are supported by our in-house multi-disciplined Health Physics team. Our teams collaborate with others to ensure the safe and cost effective management of the UK’s nuclear legacy. Supported by our Consultancy Services and Science and Technology teams, together with our supply chain partners, we offer a range of services covering the full spectrum of any nuclear decommissioning project.
Decommissioning and Waste Management
We operate within some of the UK’s most hazardous facilities, collaborating with our clients and supply chain partners to overcome challenges and deliver optimum decommissioning solutions. Our primary aim is to support our clients in the safe decommissioning of their facilities with a focus on the waste hierarchy to ensure that waste is minimised and sentenced accordingly.
We offer a complete range of services that span the full life cycle of any nuclear decommissioning project. Our highly qualified and experienced teams are able to drive all aspects of the decommissioning process, from developing the initial concept and generating robust documentation packages to hands-on operations in conditions ranging from C0 to C5.
Some of the decommissioning and waste management services we offer are:
- Development of decommissioning and waste management strategies and solutions
- Design, procurement and installation of plant and equipment to support decommissioning
- Preparation of implementation documentation (method statements, risk assessments, lifting plans, waste management documentation, etc.)
- Facility modifications/refurbishment/enhancements to support decommissioning
- POCO support and delivery
- Size reduction, including remote cutting techniques
- Facility, plant and equipment decontamination
- Remote solid and mobile waste retrieval, processing and packaging
- Sampling and dispatch for analysis
- Waste sentencing and consignment
Our team of multi-skilled classified operatives are trained and experienced in the installation and operation of a wide range of plant and equipment within controlled areas on nuclear licensed sites and have extensive experience of completing installation projects within radiologically hazardous conditions. These include plant installation and commissioning, HVAC, process pipework and electrical and instrumentation packages.
We have a unique understanding of radiological protection and radioactive waste management issues and are able to provide our customers with expert advice and practical support through both the project development and delivery phases.
Our team has experience of working with the majority of the radionuclides encountered within the UK nuclear industry and can provide the following services to support the complete project lifecycle:
- RPA consultancy
- Provision of RPS and health physics support, including the provision and operation of all associated equipment
- Establishment and management of controlled areas under the Ionising Radiation Regulations
- Preparation and management of documentation: dose assessments, radiological risk assessments, local rules, EA licensing submissions and BAT assessments and statements
We have both the technical knowledge and practical experience to efficiently complete the remediation and packaging of contaminated land for onward disposal.
Providing pragmatic and cost effective solutions to our client’s requirements and ensuring compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements is the key focus for all our projects. Our teams successfully deliver projects of various sizes and complexities, ensuring the highest standards of safety and quality, whilst also engaging support and understanding from wider stakeholders including government agencies and the general public. Projects are delivered with support from our in-house radiological and waste specialists, together with specialist subcontract support from our supply chain partners.
We have been at the forefront of providing operational support to both solid and mobile waste retrieval projects for over 20 years and have completed many waste retrieval campaigns across the UK, successfully retrieving and processing more than 2 million litres of radioactive waste for onward storage.
We design, build, install, commission and operate waste retrieval and processing plants for many nuclear licensed sites, using off the shelf equipment to provide modular designs that can be easily modified for use elsewhere. This approach has enabled our teams to bring significant cost and programme savings to projects whilst incorporating learning from experience to ensure continuous improvement.
These services are supported by our Science and Technology team, providing our customers with a fully integrated legacy management system through the extensive testing and demonstration of our solutions before delivery and implementation at our client’s sites.
