Mobilisation and Momentum for MILWEP

Despite the latest lockdown, the Modular Intermediate Level Waste Encapsulation Plant (MILWEP) project team have been working hard to maintain progress on the multi-site, multi-year programme. After a six-month pause from site operations last year due to the pandemic, additional COVID-19 safety measures were implemented to protect everyone involved in the project and to allow the works to continue.

At Berkeley, the works are ongoing to complete the site acceptance testing ahead of moving into inactive commissioning, whilst the team at Hinkley Point A are completing the remaining major installation activities. In late November of last year, work commenced at the third and final MILWEP site, Chapelcross, where the NSG team mobilised as principal contractor. Installation and construction activities are progressing well, despite the additional precautionary measures and the unplanned winter construction phase.

All three MILWEP sites are on track to be completed by 2022. This achievement is largely due to the hard work and dedication of the project team and the positive collaboration between Magnox, NSG and the supply chain.
