Key Milestone Achieved on Magnox PPSREP Project
The NSG-Magnox project team recently achieved a key milestone on the Pond Purge Sump Retrieval and Encapsulation Project (PPSREP) with the successful completion of the integrated works testing phase at NSG’s R&D facility in Chorley. Starting in September 2019, the project scope comprises the detailed design, manufacture, testing, installation and commissioning of a system to retrieve intermediate level waste (ILW) from within the Pond Purge Sump at Hunterston A.

The system has now been stripped and transportation to Hunterston A is under way via multiple transports. The NSG site team has been mobilised and installation is set to commence in the coming weeks, which will be followed by a stage of inactive commissioning by the combined NSG and Magnox site team. This will be the final stage of NSG’s involvement the project, with the system being handed over to Magnox to complete the active commissioning and setting to work phases. Despite the disruption caused by the pandemic, the programme is scheduled to finish on time and under budget.
