Working at NSG

At NSG, our vision is to be the nuclear industry’s preferred partner and we believe our people are fundamental to achieving this. We have a long and proud history of safely delivering cost-effective decommissioning, waste management and land remediation services for the nuclear industry. Our positive working culture is driven by our four core values: passion, integrity, challenge, and collaboration.

We are seeking four graduates to join our team in the roles of Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer and EC&I Engineer. Starting in September 2022, we are looking for graduates with relevant degree subjects that are interested in starting their careers in the engineering sector/nuclear industry.

Our Defence team is a dynamic and rapidly growing part of our thriving business and we want to develop more talent for the future. Based in newly refurbished offices near to bustling Reading, this is a great opportunity to work with and learn from a range of people with experience from across the industry.

In this role, you will receive:

  • Competitive starting salary, paid overtime and allowances, plus a discretionary annual bonus.
  • 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • Core working hours are 37.5 hours per week, primarily based in the office for support, but with opportunities for flexible working available.
  • Life assurance and pension schemes.
  • Company-funded healthcare plan and enhanced sick, maternity, and paternity pay.
  • Regular training and CPD/accreditation opportunities.

What it’s like working in a graduate role

Your mentor will be based at site with you, providing you with the necessary training so you can develop into a competent engineer in your chosen field. You will embrace delivering a wide variety of tasks and projects, with a focus of these roles being the delivery of excellent services to our clients and partners.

We understand how important our staff are to the success of our business. We will support you through a range of benefits, policies and initiatives, one of which is the opportunity to travel to some of our other UK locations – travel and expenses paid, of course! Throughout your career with us, you will have the opportunity to get involved in various aspects of the job to fully immerse yourself and progress within our business.

It’s not all about experience and qualifications. We want someone with the right attitude and aptitude to fit right in at NSG. Someone who takes pride in themselves and others – and, most importantly, a willingness to learn and develop. Any industry work experience is just a plus!

A minimum classification of 2:1 in a relevant degree to the field of engineering, i.e., Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Control Systems Engineering and Building Services Engineering. If you feel you have relevant experience or qualifications other than those listed, please still apply and you will be considered.

Skills and characteristics

To succeed in the graduate programme, you will need enthusiasm, to be a fantastic collaborator and be hungry to learn! We are looking for someone who enjoys solving problems whilst remaining calm and behaving in a professional manner. Communication is key, so we need someone who loves to collaborate with others, challenge others, but also accept being challenged yourself and remain respectful. We are looking for individuals committed to improving and continuously embracing new opportunities for development.

Due to the nature of the vetting processes required for the role, you must be a UK national, have lived in the UK for the past ten consecutive years and have the right to work in the UK.

How does the graduate programme work?

This isn’t a structured graduate scheme, so we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. You will work with your dedicated and experienced mentor to develop a personal plan for your progression within the company. Unlike a lot of graduate schemes, you won’t be hired on a temporary basis for a few years, you will be given a permanent contract – we want to keep developing you into the future and help you progress your career within the company.

We will sponsor your enrolment on relevant qualifications and accredited schemes, such as our internal IMechE MPDS scheme to become chartered. Together, we will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours you will need to succeed in your career. You can start earning a graduate wage immediately, with support to help you learn on the job and time off the job as needed for training.
