Services / Technical services / Waste simulation
One of the major challenges in providing radioactive waste development services is understanding the physical and chemical properties of the waste. NSG have made huge strides in recent years in developing a range of simulants which closely represent a variety of waste streams. NSG's experienced team have the ability to recognise the crucial issues with specific wastes. This allows the appropriate tests to be developed which provides relevant scientific underpinning of a proposed solution.
The challenges faced can include replicating chemical properties (e.g. pH, cement retardation, corrosion products etc.) and physical properties (such as rheology, particle size distribution, interstitial spacing etc.).
Examples of simulants that have been developed include the following:-
- Pond Sludges
- AETP Sludges
- Desiccant
- Ion Exchange Resins
- Flocculants
- Paints and Coatings
- Reactor Shielding Blocks
- Fuel Elements, Cladding
- Fuel Corrosion Products
- Fuel Skips
- Drums
- Pipes
- Receptacles
- Softwaste
- Wash Liquors
