Services / Site operations / Plant Operations
One of the major challenges facing the Nuclear Industry is the retrieval and immobilisation of intermediate and low level waste. Traditionally the approach to solving this problem has been to design and build bespoke systems on a site by site basis. This approach was both costly and time consuming.
Working with a partner, NSG has designed and built a number of process plants based on a modular design principle. This has not only enabled the plants to be transported from site to site, but also to be operated on a campaign basis. Work began on this project in 1988, and since then NSG has built three low level waste plants and has completed over 35 campaigns, processing more than 1.25million litres of waste.

In parallel with this work, NSG has been involved in the design, build, installation and operation of a Transportable ILW Solidification Plant (TILWSP) for processing intermediate level waste.
NSG has provided an operational support service to the Nuclear Industry for the retrieval and solidification of low and intermediate level waste for over 20 years. Through this we have developed the capability of operating these plants on most of the UK Nuclear Licensed sites. Whilst this service is provided as a planned operational programme, we are also able to provide a rapid response to unplanned events in many instances.

NSG provides a complete waste processing service including:
- Plant design
- Process development
- Waste form formulation
- Plant supply, installation, test and commissioning
- Plant operation, including supply of consumables (drums, cement)
- Storage and maintenance of plant
- Infrastructure modifications (e.g. ventilation upgrade)
These services are supported by our Science and Technology team, providing a fully integrated legacy management system.
